Joel spoke to The House of Wellness about whether sugar-free lollies are a healthier option this Halloween – see the link.
Sugar-free lollies contain a variety of non-nutritive sweeteners, which are much sweeter than table sugar. So manufacturers only need to add a small amount to provide that sweet hit. Due to the small quantity required, these tend to have little or no impact on the energy content of a food or affect a person’s blood sugar levels.
While non-nutritive sweeteners can help those with diabetes better manage their blood glucose levels, sugar-free lollies are still considered a discretionary choice and according to Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ), they should only be consumed on occasion, not every day.
